Laser Peening for Higher Functionalization of Materials

Laser Peening for Higher Functionalization of Materials

(Yuko AONO)

Laser peening is a surface treatment method that improves the mechanical properties of materials by irradiating a short-pulse laser beam on the material surface under water. This laboratory proposes surface modification methods of industrial value, focusing on functional materials to which laser peening is rarely applied.

Application to Carbide and Cermet Tools

We are experimenting with the application of laser peening to cemented carbide and cermet, which are common tool materials. We have shown that laser peening is effective in increasing the hardness of these materials, and that it also improves tool life when applied to tool cutting edges.

Application to Spinal Fixation Rods

We aim to contribute to improving the quality of life of patients with scoliosis and kyphosis by improving the fatigue strength of rod materials that correct the spine of patients with scoliosis and kyphosis. Laser peening of bio-alloy materials and fatigue tests simulating human body movements are conducted using actual orthopedic rods.
